Þórunn Gréta Sigurðardóttir studied composition at the Reykjavík Academy of Music and graduated in 2008. She finished her Bachelor of Arts degree in composition from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2011 and furthered her studies in Germany, finishting her M.Mus. at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in 2014. Her composition teachers were Úlfar Ingi Haraldsson, Atli Ingólfsson and Manfred Stahnke. She was an active participant in the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt in 2012 and attended masterclasses with Brian Ferneyhough, Georges Aperghis and others.

 

Her music has been performed by various ensembles and soloists, such as Caput Ensemble, Cikada Ensemble, Skark Ensemble, Duo Harpverk, Kristinn Sigmundsson, Hanna Dóra Sturludóttur, Elisabeth Holmertz and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

 

In her most recent works, she has been experimenting with the form of modern musical theater and music in relation to text and acoustics, as well as composing soundscapes for theater performances, vocal music and chamber music. Thorunn wrote the opera KOK which was awarded the Icelandic Music Award as Music Event of the Year and received several nominations to the Icelandic Theatre Awards.
