Ingibjörg Ýr studied composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts with Hróðmar I. Sigurbjörnsson and Anna Thorvaldsdottir, finishing a BA in 2016. The following winter Ingibjörg did an internship with Anna Thorvaldsdottir in the UK. Ýr has worked with various stage groups, orchestras, dancers choirs and chamber ensembles. Recently her works have been premiered by, among others, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (ISO), Caput, the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra, Nordic Affect and Siggi String Quartet. In 2019 her piece O was among two representatives for Iceland at the International Rostrum of Composers. In 2020 she won Best Newcomer at the Icelandic Music Awards and was nominated in 2022 for Composition of the Year.

Ingibjörg Ýr is a founding member of art collective Hlökk which released its first album Hulduhljóð in 2019. It won the Kraumur Award and was nominated for Album of the Year at the IMA’s. Members of Hlökk make music through an interactive approach using both visual arts, poetry and new instruments and sound sculptures made by Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir, another founding member.
